Dryden and Dickinson on Losing Loves
During the Romantic period of literature poets and artists center on emotions, nature, and about the feelings involved in their subject of prize rather than simply stating the object in question. ii unafraid examples of this period are the poems One Happy Moment by John Dryden and I Can non Live Without You by Emily Dickinson because they both typify the emotions felt by the speaker, yet at the same while the two contradict each others views and feelings on the same subject. An slow way to comprehend the Romantic Period of literature is to probe the similarities and differences between the two poems and their contrasting messages.
Even though Dryden and Dickinson were certainly not contemporaries in writing, the concepts they shared stretched across the time-gap. These two poems are so similar, in accompaniment, it begs the question as to whether or not Dickinson wrote her poem in response to Dryden. Their situations and settings were indeed similar, in that they were losing their lovers and feeling the agony of the moment. In both poems the speaker is tormented at the prospect: I can die with her, solely not live without her.

(Dickinson, Lines 1-2, 13) In Dickinsons case it is necessary, in Drydens case it is the only choice left.
The contrasts between the time periods possess the differences that much more acute. Dryden was part of the wisdom age, and Dickinson, while not in the middle of it, was certainly part of the Romantic term in literature.
