A critical Review of Alice Walkers Everyday utilise: Relationship between Women and Quilting
Everyday Use is a story revolving around the relationship between a mother and her devil daughters; Dee and Maggie (Walker &Christain, 1994). Walker portrays the personality between the two sisters as separate entities. Dee is portrayed as the most prevalent and has big ambitions as opposed to Maggie who tends to hide in the tint of her sister. The act of comfortering in this story is perfected in Maggie. This relationship forces their mother to become a choice on whom to place the quilt to transcend to other generations. Though at some point, Maggie suggests that the quilt should be given to Dee; however, this only make their mother to view Maggie from a different perspective. This brings out the simple mindedness in Maggie but compounds Dee personality as a super ambitious individual as well as school (Walker & Christian, 1994).
Walkers story is full of contradictions which seem to be a challenge to a belief that people may hold. The quilt that is widely covered in the story is peradventure utilize by the author to show the experience during her days.
On the other side, the social function of quilt by Walker may be an attempt to bring out how identities are close-fitting components of cultures or it can as well be used to create unity between two opposing elements. Basically, the quilt has been widely used to depict cultural identity among American women. Maybe during the times of Walker, fictions were used under the cover of men, and the use of quilt in Everyday Use may destine that it removes women from a state of supremacy in a tightly patriarchal society in order to give the erst voiceless a voice. But moving out from the domination may also entangle womens relationships.
