Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are at their house office at 221b Baker Street in London. There is a dusky cane and Watson is examining it. Chapter 2
Mortimer shows Holmes and Watson a manuscript that Holmes had already noticed and dated at 1730. The document dated 1742, Baskerville Hail, reveals the legend of the Baskerville curse. At the time of the Great Revolution, Hugo Baskerville lorded over the Baskerville mansion in Devonshire.
