To be honest, I didnt get it. Not the first time I read it. Not the twenty-second time I recited it in my high school auditorium. It didnt flip sense. But what did make sense was his delectation of language and sound to make the poems impact lasting. I remember sitting in my coachs classroom, repeating occupancy after line, enunciating separately and every syllable until I was blue in the face. The hard Ts on little, promontory, it, stood, isolated, to, vacant, vast; exploring every possible authority to make each filament distinct from the other 2. In fact, the entire first stanza is full of hard Ts making the idea of the spider still intimidating and past coming in with the second stanza to make it seem indefatigable and almost endearing.
Whitman also uses repetition to his advantage, and often; markd, filament, ever, surrounded, till, O my Soulâ¦.so many repeated phrases and words that at first seemed redundant but ultimately reach out to make an impact and bring his point about the spider, and himself, across perfectly. His use of language is absolutely awe-inspiring in the second stanza, attractively pairing words to make gasp-inducing phrasing. The first time I read the poem, the language struck me most; Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing. That line really brings across the spiders struggle to offer its web, how quickly it must move and how often it might miscarry but still never gives up.
